This piece was originally given as a gymnastics medal in the early 1900's for a job well done.  It's pretty enough today to wear as unique piece of jewelry.  In the center is a lion holding a crown in one hand and a sword in the other and surrounded by a laurel wreath- the symbol of triumph.
